I love vintage design. Some of the most iconic pieces of furniture were created between the 1920s and 1960s and it’s thrilling to see people appreciate vintage and give new life to items that would have otherwise (shamefully) been relegated to the tip!
For me, the best way to showcase vintage is by working it with modern pieces. There are no rules that say you must only use furniture from one era. In fact, I think that can look a little themed and unnatural. No, the best looking spaces are those that shun convention and mix modern and vintage with abandon. Here’s some inspiration to help you achieve the look in your home.
1. Mix and match the details
It’s all about the details, like vintage rugs on pristine wooden floors and modern art on the walls. Choose furniture from a range of eras too but make sure the room isn’t overflowing with stuff. This creates a look that is eclectic but not busy or overbearing.
2. Highlight the period features of your property
If you’re lucky enough to live in a property with original period features, make them a part of your home design. World-renowned designer Orla Kiely shows off the gorgeous Victorian features of her home with great aplomb! And although the living room has a distinct vintage vibe, she doesn’t hide away modern features like the TV.
3. Create contrasts
Make a statement by juxtaposing ornate antiques with minimalist modern pieces, á la this desk and chair. Both pieces are impactful in their own right, yet somehow they blend together quite naturally, neither one taking the attention away from the other. I really like how Stark’s Ghost chair allows you to see the all detailing on the desk too.
