60 Years of Design from Habitat

Habitat was founded by Terence Conran in 1964 and is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

Terence Conran is one of the most influential British designers of the 20th century and as well as Habitat, founded the Conran Shop and London’s Design Museum.

Habitat’s launch was a revolutionary event in interior design history. Conran introduced modern European-inspired furniture and homewares on an unsuspecting population still recovering from post war austerity. Suddenly everyone wanted chicken bricks and continental quilts.

To celebrate their milestone birthday, Habitat have launched their 60 Years of Design collection of furniture, tableware, textiles and accessories.

The collection heralds the return of much-loved designs, from the 1960’s to the early 2000’s, reimagined for modern life by Habitat’s in-house design studio and industry-leading designers such as Sebastian Conran and Tord Boonje. Highlights include (of course!) the iconic chicken brick from 1964, Larsa bistro chairs and the and collectable ribbon lamp.

Here are ten of the must-buy pieces.

Bobby Metal Table Lamp

Bobby was first introduced in early 2000.  It has come lots of colours, been fluorescent and even appeared as a 3 headed version. Now, in bright pillar box red, the Bobby table desk lamp looks as cool as it did in the noughties.

Lucinda Metal Garden Bench

Designed in-house by Kate McCormack, the modular Lucinda bench features a slatted silhouette which filters light with dramatic effect, casting changing patterns throughout the day. You can mix and match with other pieces from the Lucinda collection.

Larsa Dining Chairs

The Larsa is new take on the classic wooden bistro design seen in European cafes for over 100 years. This style has been in and out of Habitat’s collection for the past 30 years and now comes in a bright limited-edition red.

Ribbon Metal Table Lamp

The Ribbon table light looks as contemporary as it did back in the mid 00s when it was first launched. Inspired by origami, it’s made of cool steel sheet, powder coated in a vibrant limited edition electric blue.

Ronda Jacquard Bedding Set

Designed exclusively for Habitat by Margo Selby, an award-winning British artist and textile designer, this Ronda set draws inspiration from the Habitat archive and is deliberately bold, abstract and playful.

Akari 4 Poster Metal Bed Frame

Designed in-house by Will Hudson, an industrial designer based in Sheffield, this 4-poster bed is a clean graphic shape that looks contemporary yet timeless.

Poulet Stoneware Chicken Brick

Originally made from terracotta, the Chicken Brick was first introduced in 1964. It’s been re-imagined using durable stoneware with a matt black glaze. Believe it or not, it will cook a whole chicken to perfection.

Kaya Side Table

Designed in-house by Will Hudson, the Kaya takes inspiration from Hudson’s woodland walks and the stumps of old oak trees. Woven by hand, the shape of the table is free flowing and natural.

Hana Dressing and Console Table

Reintroduced from the Habitat archives, the Hana table is crafted using solid oak and oak veneer and works well as a console table, a dressing table or a small footprint desk. It oozes quality and is an iconic piece.

Tuva Fabric Curved Chair

Designed in-house by Will Hudson, the Tuva curved chair is inspired by the futuristic aesthetics of the 80s and blends retro-inspired design with modern comfort.
