Bath is a hot spot for interior design addicts. A city blessed with beautiful Georgian architecture and a reputation for style, it is no surprise top interiors brands set up shop in the city. Here are my 10 best new buys from my favourite shops in Bath.
Atelier Ellis
Independent paint brand, Atelier Ellis, came to Walcot Street in 2023. Atelier Ellis make beautiful, breathable, natural colour paints with incredibly intense pigments. Owner Cassandra Ellis creates colours with the feelings they evoke at front of mind.
I love Fallen Plum, a very dark burnt red. It is, as Cassandra says, “an extremely beautiful and almost primal colour that is rich and evocative”. It is one of Cassandra’s original eighteen colours and one that she has painted her own library in from top to toe.
Visit the shop and studio on Walcot Street to see more of Cassandra’s beautiful paints and pick up a hand-painted colour card.
deVOL Kitchens
deVOL opened their showroom in George Street last year. They renovated a classic corner shop and have made each room into one of their kitchens, showcasing their Classic English, Heirloom and Shaker ranges.
As well as beautiful timeless kitchens, deVOL also make kitchen accessories, hardware and lighting. New this autumn is the Milk Glass Task Light featuring a very fine translucent conical shade, clasped between aged brass screws. Each shade is individually mouth-blown and has a milky translucent finish which emits a wonderful warm light. These kind of task lights were used in the big kitchens of Victorian stately homes to cast directional light whilst being easy to clean and practical. They work equally as perfectly in modern 21st century kitchens.
8 Holland Street
In the spring of 2023, Eight Holland Street opened a gallery in Margaret’s Buildings in Bath, where they showcase a dynamic series of exhibitions alongside an extensive collection of modern and contemporary artworks, vintage luxury furniture, ceramics, rare textiles, and design. They have a Townhouse where you can stay and regularly hold exhibitions, talks, and special events.
Check out the new in section of their website for the latest of their one-off pieces. I have my eye on the 1960’s Vico Magistretti beech and rush Italian armchair which would make a real statement in any room.
Divine Savages
Wallpaper and fabric designers Divine Savages design exquisite wallpapers and fabrics, glamorous home accessories, fabulous gifts and limited-edition art prints. I’ve used their fabulous wallpapers in lots of my projects and it’s a joy to have them located in a lovely showroom in Margaret’s Buildings.
Their new Lovebirds wallpaper in ‘Eggshell Green’, is a gorgeous design with a soft green base and accents of orange, brown and green. Featuring a beautiful pattern of illustrated birds and majestic blooms, it is great as a bedroom or bathroom wallpaper.
Jim Lawrence
Jim Lawrence specialise in classic, high-quality products made in Great Britain, including lighting, curtain poles and lampshades. Their beautiful Bath showroom in Walcot Street displays the entire lighting and homeware collection.
New into their range are their beautiful large solid antiqued brass Button Holdbacks, which will keep your curtains neat and tidy when they are drawn back.
Holloways of Ludlow
Right in the middle of Milsom Street, the Bath showroom of Holloways of Ludlow is home to a wide selection of European brands, with a particular focus on Scandinavian design.
You will find brands like Hay, Original BTC, Gubi, Buster and Punch, Flos, Bert Frank, Fritz Hansen, Ferm Living, Kartell and Tom Dixon.
New in is the Anglepoise Original 1227 Mini Table Lamp National Trust Edition. This lamp has the classic Anglepoise shade and a pyramid-shaped base and comes in Sage Green, Buttermilk Yellow and Neptune Blue. It’s an iconic light that will stand the test of time and look great in any room.
Graham and Green
Graham and Green always have exquisite new pieces in their furniture collection; designed exclusively by Jamie Graham and sourced from around the world they are always unique and eye-catching.
Their new Baylor grey velvet and cane armchair features an intricately woven cane back and sides, created using thin strips of rattan in a hexagonal pattern. It is complemented by a white-washed mango wood frame with a French Rococo-style carved design and dark grey velvet upholstery. It would work in many different interiors, from contemporary to traditional and has a classic design that won’t date.
OKA
OKA, at the top of Milsom Street, is where you can buy large furniture pieces such as sofas, armchairs and ottomans, alongside cushions, throws, vases and other home accessories. OKA is all about hand-picked global treasures, rich textures and patterns, and timeless furniture.
Look out for their wonderful lampshades, incredible rugs and ever-changing range of cushions in wonderfully muted tones. This season the handwoven silk Tora cushion in Red Madder is the perfect way to add that unexpected touch of red to your home.
Arlo and Jacob
Bath’s newest furniture store is Arlo & Jacob, who have just opened a beautiful new showroom on Broad Street.
A family company, Arlo & Jacob make sofas that are beautiful and practical but also last a lifetime. The hardwood frames are guaranteed for life, and you can choose from a range of fabrics and finishes to create your own perfect sofa.
New in is the Ava Pillow Back small sofa. This sofa has high back supportive cushions and hand finished scroll arms and offers contemporary, classic comfort with a practical twist for easy family living. I’d choose a colour like deep mustard or a dark mossy green to add an on-trend earthy shade into a living room.
Neptune
The Tram Shed complex in Walcot Street is owned by Neptune, who are popular for their pared back elegance and comfortably informal look. From kitchens to lighting and paints, Neptune sells a complete look, and the Bath store has room after room of inspiring designs.
New in this season is the Ophelia Footstool in a lovely geometric fabric from Fermoie called Rush Cove. Combining form and function, this elegant footstool hides two wooden trays under the cushioned top. You can take them out and put them on top to act as a drinks tray or to display books and candles.
I hope this inspires you to explore Bath’s wonderful interiors shops.
