Minimalist, functional and effortlessly cool – Danish design is back. There’s been a surge in popularity for the pared-back aesthetic that threw Denmark into the design limelight back in the 1950s and 60s. Then it was the iconic furniture designs of Hans Wegner and Arne Jacobsen that captivated the world stage, now that torch is carried by brands like Ferm Living and Muuto.

I use a huge amount of Danish furniture and homewares in my interior design projects. Why? Because it’s timeless, versatile and functional. Danish design just doesn’t go out of fashion, and I know I can depend on the quality.

In my time as an interior designer, I’ve found myself returning to the same brands over and over again. Here are a few of my favourites:

Ferm Living

From gorgeous graphic prints in a stunning palette of muted colours to minimalist, almost geometric kitchenware; there’s a lot to love about Ferm Living. A relatively young brand, the label was founded by designer Trine Anderson in 2006. Back then the label only created cool graphic wallpapers, but they now design a complete range of homewares.

Menu

Established in 1976, Menu is a world-renowned design brand. Their products ooze cool Scandinavian vibes and a ‘soft minimalism’. Menu’s aesthetic is defined by their dedication to originality and innovation. They’re always using materials like wood, marble and steel in new ways, finding clever solutions to age-old problems and seeking out new production methods.

This family-run company was established in 1962, during the heyday of Danish design. It began with just one design; the Kubus candlestick, and lead to decades of success for the Lassen family. The Kubus is one of the most iconic products from that era, and is still wildly popular today. By Lassen’s collection has expanded to include a huge range of furniture and home accessories, all with classic Scandi appeal.
