Every home is different, and every person has individual taste and needs. In all my years of designing, I have never recreated the same room twice. That said there are a few design tricks that are so universal, they work in any space regardless of size, shape and style. So if you want a quick update for your home, try one of these first. I can guarantee it’ll work.
- Accent Walls
We’re all familiar with the accent or feature wall. This design trick has been going strong for a while now and I think the reason for its success is because it is so immediately transformative. You can create the look you want in just a few short hours on almost any budget. There are numerous possibilities too; you can create an accent wall with paint or wallpaper or other materials like wood panels, brick and even metal sheeting.
- Statement Lighting
Every room needs lighting, so why not make the most of it? Lights come in all shapes, sizes and styles, so it’s easy to find something to suit your space. Try an elegant crystal chandelier in an industrial space or an oversized lamp next to a minimalist chair.
- Group Items Together
Having individual ornaments and objects scattered about your home may feel like the most natural way to style them, but try grouping items of similar style or colour together. Individually they may be beautiful but together they make much more of an impact, check out the image above for an example of just how impressive this can look.
- A Touch of Greenery
Greenery always looks gorgeous in the home. Whether potted plants, succulent terrariums, floral arrangements or windowsill herb gardens – any kind of plant works here. That little touch of nature brings a space to life, and may even have health benefits too (some plants filter the air).
