Autumn has arrived and I’m in hibernation mode. After a summer spent outdoors, autumn has many of us returning home again. This means cosy nights in front of the fire, spending more time over hearty meals and just generally battening down the hatches for winter.
For me, that means making a few design changes to my living room. It’s where my family spend most of their time, so it makes sense that this space gets the most love. Here’s how I get ready for autumn:
Colour me Happy
I don’t repaint every year but if I were to do so this year, I might consider a dusky blush pink. It’s the new IT neutral and a lovely warm tone. Elegant and elevating, blush pink works really well with navy and grey – also great options for autumn/winter.
Another surprising autumnal hue is a deep turquoise or teal. Dark colours are bold and dramatic; they bring the space in making it feel cosy and comfortable. If painting all four walls feels like too much, try the half and half painting trick.
Textile Textures
One thing I always do is bring out the blankets, throws and fluffy cushions. Autumn calls for comfort, and that means snuggling down on the sofa to binge watch your favourite show on Netflix.
Mix and match your fabrics to create a dynamic and ultra cosy look. Sheepskin, cable knit, velvet and wool are solid cold-weather choices.
Autumn Arrangements
One of the best things about autumn is nature’s beauty. Bring that indoors with some beautiful arrangements.
Think vases of flowers in shades of orange and green, minimalist pumpkin displays and candles surrounded by pinecones and leaves. Get the kids involved in making their own little nature displays and fill your home with the sights and smells of autumn.
What about you? What changes do you make in preparation for the colder months?
