Judging by the almost biblical levels of rain we’ve been having, the Indian summer I was so hopeful for may be a distant dream. But it’s not all doom and gloom, because now we can start talking about autumn and winter interior trends and inspiration.
I’m starting with fireplaces because these characterful features can be very easily styled to perfection. Even if you never use the fireplace for its intended purpose, it can be an elegant and cosy accent to the room.
So without further ado, here are three creative ways to dress your fireplace.
- Simple Scandi Style
The Scandinavians know a thing or two about keeping warm. This is perfect for a modern and minimalist home. With clean lines, this pared back look is effortlessly cool; a really refreshing alternative to more traditional fireplaces.
A painted white surround, a utilitarian cast iron wood-burner and a neatly stacked pile of logs is all you need to nail this trend.
- Vintage Tile
This is a really versatile way to dress up your fireplace. As you can see from the images above, vintage tile works in both modern and traditional settings.
I love patterned tile because it instantly adds character and interest to even the most neutral of spaces. Tile is also very easy to clean and maintain which is ideal if you plan to use your fireplace often.
My favourite source for vintage tiles is the incomparable Bert and May. As well as salvaging vintage tiles, they have a comprehensive range of handmade originals.
- Colour Craze
A new take on the accent wall: accent fireplaces. This look is striking and almost theatrical, particularly when you combine a dark, dramatic hue with an ornate surround.
Personally, I love the hint of bright colour against the neutral background; it’s really fresh and unique. You can have a lot of fun with this look, which is ultimately what interior design is all about!
