I don’t know about you but I can walk around my home at any time and find at least one or two small issues. Today I want to show you some quick fixes to common issues; issues that affect the overall look, and in some cases, comfort of your home. Because peeling paint and fraying carpet may not be imminently serious, but it can nag at you. And when you’ve spent time and effort creating a beautiful space, it may as well be damn near perfect.
Peeling Paint
Peeling paint can ruin an otherwise spotless room. Paint peels when it’s unable to adhere properly to the wall. This could be caused by poor quality paint, an improperly prepared surface or damp walls. To avoid peeling paint in the first place, clean and prepare the surface before painting, apply a primer and carefully choose the right paint for your walls. To fix peeling paint, you will most likely need to repaint the whole room, following the process above.
Flat Sofa Cushions
Is your sofa looking a little flat and tired? One quick and very cheap DIY fix is to add more stuffing. You can buy stuffing material from any craft shop (though you will need it in bulk, so online may be better) to fill the back cushions. Simply stuff the cushions as much as you can, making sure to reach right into the corners. For the seat cushions, wrap the foam in several layers of quilt batting (also available in most craft shops) to give it extra oomph. It’s worth bearing in mind that this is a temporary fix, for a professional, long-lasting finish speak to an upholsterer.
Yellowed Light Switches
Yellowed light switches are inevitable, eventually. This is because white plastic turns yellow over time due to a chemical reaction that occurs when it is exposed to light and other environmental factors. Your best option here is to simply replace the switches (but do hire an electrician to ensure the job is done properly and safely). To avoid yellowing altogether, replace white switches with a black or metal-toned switch.
Damaged/Fraying Carpet
When carpet issues arise, most of us will simply look to replace. But there are a number of problems you can quite easily fix yourself. This useful article shows you how to repair burns or holes, reattach carpet that has pulled away from its threshold, and rescue water-damaged carpet.
